8 Things We Should Do to Protect Our Eyes

It is National Eye Care Month! While we are in the business of making eyes look and feel beautiful, we also know the great importance of keeping your eyes safe and healthy at all times.  Today on The Lash Lounge Blog we are going to share 8 things we should all be doing to protect our eyes! Hopefully we are already doing most of these things, but if not . . . take note.

1. Wear Sunglasses

The right pair of shades will help protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure boosts your chances of cataracts and macular degeneration. Choose a pair that blocks 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound lenses help protect your eyes from the side. Polarized lenses reduce glare while you drive. 2. Avoid Too Much Strain from the Computer and Mobile Devices

You may not realize just how much strain you are putting on your eyes throughout the day when it comes to staring at the computer and your cell phone. Eyestrain, blurry vision, dry eyes, trouble seeing at a distance and headaches can all result from too much time spent staring at a computer and mobile devices. However, this is our day in age and many of us work each day for hours on our computer and cell phone.

3. Make sure your glasses or contact prescription is up to date.

If you do spend a great deal of time in front of the computer or mobile device and you also wear contacts or glasses – it is very important to make sure your prescriptions are up to date. If you are staring at a computer screen with outdated glasses or dated contact prescriptions, this can put even more strain on your eyes.

4.  Keep Your Computer Screen Level to Your Eyes

When your computer screen is level to your eyes and with the top of the monitor, this lets you look slightly down at the screen. This is better for preventing eye strain.

5. Eat Well For Your Eyes

Good eye health starts with the food on your plate. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help ward off age-related vision problems like macular degeneration and cataracts. To get them, fill your plate with:

  • Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and collards
  • Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish
  • Eggs, nuts, beans, and other nonmeat protein sources
  • Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices
  • Oysters and pork

A well-balanced diet also helps you stay at a healthy weight. That lowers your odds of obesity and related diseases like type 2 diabetes, which is the leading cause of blindness in adults.

6.  Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes

Rubbing your eyes too often can cause them damage in several ways (and is also not good for your lashes, of course.) Since your hands carry a large number of germs, rubbing your eyes can cause the direct transfer of these germs and lead to infections. Aggressive rubbing can damage your cornea as well. If your eyes itch due to allergies, rubbing them can make the reaction more severe. See your optometrist if you constantly feel the need to rub your eyes.

7.  Sleep! Your Eyes Need Rest Too

Your eye health is greatly affected by whether or not you get enough sleep. In short, fatigue can cause eye strain, dry eyes, eye spasms, and blurred vision. In the long-term, lack of sleep can lead to damage to the optic nerve, which can cause pain and impaired vision. To prevent these issues, improve your sleep by: going to sleep and getting up at the same time every day, getting outside more during the day, exercising regularly during daytime hours and limiting caffeine and nicotine.

8. Get Regular Eye Exams

As an adult, you should visit an eye doctor every couple of years to ensure good eye health. If you don’t already see an eye doctor, ask your family doctor for a referral, or ask friends and family for recommendations. If you experience conditions like vision loss, pain, or irritation, make an appointment immediately; many eye conditions are treatable if addressed early.
