Franchisee SpotLight

Franchise Location: Austin NW

Owner – Teresa Robertson

Opening Date: May 3, 2011

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up and why?

As a kid, I did not have any exact plans as to what I wanted to be besides the obvious….A dancer.  It wasn’t until I started college and took a drawing class that I realized I had artistic ability.  I’ve studied design and art and everything I’ve done since then has held an element of those two things and business.

What are some of the previous jobs that you’ve had?

I have a checkered past.  I’ve waited tables, managed apartments (where my favorite things to do were redecorating units to designing the newsletter), clothing retail and before the Lash Lounge I had my own part time business of home decorating and faux finishing, specializing in plasters.

What made you decide that your previous jobs or business ventures were not “right” for you?

Most of my previous jobs were out of necessity but I always found a creative way to put my personality into it.  It wasn’t until I could just work for myself that I was free to just be creative.  Ten years of climbing ladders and wearing paint stained clothes had run its’ course and I was ready for something new and to look like a girl again!  I had [worn] lashes for several years when I decided on opening an eyelash extension salon.  I was doing research on the web when I ran across The Lash Lounge and just knew it was the right fit.

What attracted you to the Lash Lounge when you were searching for a business opportunity?

The fact that it is a growing industry.  You will still run across people that aren’t familiar with lash extensions and I see that as a positive.  There is still room to grow and there is room for competition and in the meantime we are establishing our name and reputation as THE place to go for lashes.  It still allows my creative side to come out and play in the boutique and also with the permanent make up.

What do you think makes this particular business unique?

That we specialize in primarily lashes and there aren’t too many other menu options.  I like being the best of just a few [services] than so-so at 100 just for the sake of convenience.  I love the salon/boutique combo and our private line of cosmetics.

What is your favorite part of being a Lash Lounge owner?

Honestly, that I get to shop for the boutique!  I love design and fashion.  I also love my lashes and now I’m spoiled with full lashes all the time.  That’s the fun and fluff.  Seriously, I love that being a salon owner challenges me to manage time, employees, training and budget in a way that benefits my employees as well as my company/my family.  I appreciate great customer service and I enjoy providing that to our clients.

How much time do you spend in your salon?

Being that we have only been open for seven months, I am here almost every day it is open and some when it is not.  As of late, I have been able to take more time to manage business items from our home office.  It takes time to establish your staff, procedures and routine.  I can see being able to manage an even more flexible schedule in the future and I love that I have that option.

What is it like managing a creative staff of lash stylists?

It is rewarding and challenging.  Every once and awhile you will be challenged with a new situation that isn’t in any manual or handbook and you have to think on your feet or with a piece of chocolate and by the end of the day you are a better manager and you have established a new level of commitment or appreciation from your employee.  Currently, I have a fabulous staff!

What challenges have you overcame since opening?

Hiring the right mix of stylist.  The common thread is a good work ethic and a respectful attitude.  Everything else can be worked out.

Where do you see the future of the Lash Lounge heading?

In general, I can foresee a great company forming!  It already has a fabulous track record and solid foundation for growth.  It is a growing industry and I see The Lash Lounge establishing itself within it with amazing products.  They will continue to improve the products that are available, such as the sensitive eye adhesive, and I look forward to new products coming.

What would you tell another person interested in buying a Lash Lounge franchise?

I can only share my own experience and my experience with the Lash Lounge has been great.  It has a great business model, the support is there if you need it and you do have some flexibility on the boutique side that satisfies the areas where you can make your own choices.  It’s the perfect mix of the tried and true – you know it works so it’s all taken care of for you and you can be on your own and decide what marketing works best for you or what you want to carry in the boutique.
